Three final notes… the cause of T3c is the underlying, unrelated disease; there’s nothing anyone can do about that; it’s virtually a “side-effect” of the causative disease. T1 is GENETIC, but ALSO requires a “trigger”. NO ONE gets it without the genetic markers for it – but for it to manifest, an environmental cause must trigger that immune attack on the beta cells. Among the known triggers (so far) are mumps, rubella, and the enterovirus family – a LARGE family of viruses, causing common colds and other very minor illnesses that are often unnoticed. But when exposed to one of these at a susceptible time – the person carrying the genetic markers will then experience the onset of the symptoms of T1. Not all the genetic markers are known (and its a polygenic disease – meaning it takes a COMBINATION of certain alleles to be inferred), but the primary ones are in the HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) complex on chromosome 6 of the human genome.
