During WWI, pro baseball teams would play a patriotic song either before or during the game with the crowd facing the flag (there was no official national anthem at the time. The two most common selections were the Star Spangled Banner or O Columbia the Gem of the Ocean, which became the two most popular candidates for the anthem.) It’s not a universal practice world wide. In western Europe, it’s usually only done before games of the national team. It’s not, however, if you don’t get upset at other people’s actions, it’s an OK secular ritual. We don’t have too many. So I will sit my liberal self down on the side of either continuing it or playing This Land is Your Land. When the sporting occasion is one involving competition between countries, then it happened long before I was born and is probably as old as international sporting competitions. But not always, perhaps not usually, then. An Ashes Test is not usually preceded by ‘God Save the King’ and ‘Arise Australia Fair’, for example.
