I would also like to the take a moment to discuss the weight issue and a different perspective on the turret question. The weight of tanks has always been a problem. Again as you correctly pointed out, creeping gigantism overtook German armored design during WWII. But, there was actually some sense to it. In the latter part of WWII Germany was fighting primarily on the defensive against superior numbers. German tanks (and assault guns like the Elephant) had to take enormous punishment and deliver successive knockout blows. Thus the excellent 88mm gun was coupled with larger and larger tanks. Germany was also fighting on interior lines, meaning their transport distance was shorter. While arguably they got carried away with the Elephant and Tiger II, and indisputably with the Maus, a heavier tank that could take punishment made some sense.
