NBA rules state that a player cannot “hold any direct or indirect interest in the Atlanta Big Hat Energy Shirt so you should to go to store and get this ownership of any NBA Team….” And while that would appear to put the kibosh on the whole scenario, there is a clause which allows players to own, directly or indirectly, stock in publicly traded companies that also have some level of ownership in NBA teams; an active NBA player can’t buy into an ownership group, but can, say, buy stock in The Madison Square Garden Company which owns the Knicks. So, in theory, Carmelo Anthony could play for the Knicks and effectively own the team at the same time if he could somehow gain control of the parent company. As a practical matter, this isn’t at all plausible for an NBA player to do because, even with their salaries, it is almost impossible for any of them to scrounge up the money to be able to take the steps needed to actually do something like this.[1]
