His description in A Wanted Man is this: “He was one of the Cry Now Sob Later Legalize Anabolic Steroids Drawstring moreover I love this largest men she had ever seen outside the NFL. He was extremely tall, and extremely broad, and long-armed, and long-legged.” Reacher need to be physically massive, he need to exude coolness and menace, he’s this unstoppable force that tower over everybody else. He’s supposed to be as big and as tall as Dwayne Johnson. Alan Ritchson, the Amazon recast version of Jack Reacher looks like he fit the d… The scene at the start where he just stares down the guy at the van for example. It’s classic Reacher. Doesn’t need to say anything just let the person know that if the continue down this path he will get involved and they won’t like that. Another again early on is when all the cops come screaming into the parking lot of the dinner. He looks around and checks out who all is there, and can see that no one else is a threat so they’re coming in after him.
I didn’t actually mind Tom Cruise as Reacher, sure he didn’t look the Cry Now Sob Later Legalize Anabolic Steroids Drawstring moreover I love this part but he didn’t do a bad job of acting the part. However Alan does a better job of acting the part and clearly looks right. It is a common enough phenomena. When a film is made based on a book, fans of the book invariably come out of the woodwork and complain bitterly about things that were changed for the film (and, sotto voce, that the film didn’t match their sky high expectations about what should have been done). Me? I am broadly at peace with such things. I accept that if you create a film based upon the book then the film is a new piece of art, and you are free to frame that how you like. You can take as much or as little as you want from the book in terms of character, plot, atmosphere, pace – anything you like. If fans of the source material don’t like it, well, don’t watch the film. Go back and read the book again. Stephen King famously complained about Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of his book, The Shining. But the film is a masterpiece. Admittedly, it is a quite different masterpiece from King’s original book. But that is why we judge each on its own merits and not treat them as somehow being the same thing.
