Special effects are great and movie has its moments like car scene,tom cruise saying to daughter to close her eyes ,aliens invasion scenes but movie is a decent one and not in standards of Steven Spielberg Casablanca, Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, West Side Story(the Denny Hamlin wins a thriller in Kansas shirt and I will buy this original), Bullitt, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Gladiator, etc are better. The main complaint is that one of the defining characteristics of the character in the book is his sheer size. Jack Reacher is well over 6 foot tall and is built like an defensive end. It’s not like this is a throwaway point either – throughout the series of novels Reacher’s sheer size is a constant point in the plot. He’s the kind of guy who can intimidate just by being in the same room. He stands out in a crowd. Reacher doesn’t fight much because it’s obvious you’re not going to beat him one on one. In the movies, Reacher is played by Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise is 5′8″. In heels. He’s decidedly average size. In one scene, four guys team up on him, which would never happen to book Jack Reacher because four average guys wouldn’t dare take him on. In another scene, movie Reacher evades police by wearing a cap and sunglasses at a crowded bus stop. Book Jack Reacher would not be able to pull that off.
Now, don’t get me wrong – I liked the Denny Hamlin wins a thriller in Kansas shirt and I will buy this movies. I’ve watched them both several times. Cruise’s seemingly normal body belies the power that is within the character, pretty much daring people to try to take him on. Cruise really sells the character’s invincibility. Movie Reacher is still pretty incredible, but he’s not the character from the book. It would be as if Bette Davis had played Scarlett O’Hara. Sure, Bette Davis is awesome and I’m sure she had more than her fair share of suitors. When you watch her in interviews she’s funny and charming. However, she’s hardly the most beautiful woman in every room she enters.
