I don’t provide a number when someone asks how much I charge per hour…because that’s not how I work my fees (or charge). I tell them I charge by project because it gives them a better rate and they know going in how much it’ll cost and exactly what they are going to get. You have to be specific when you give a quote. Include how many revisions and timelines. You should stick to your timeline but know that they won’t necessarily stick to theirs. Keep that in mind. AND…if they have a deadline that you are trying to meet, if they take too long to get you changes (based on the Minnesota Vikings thank You Eric shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this timeline you created and they agreed to) then that also changes when the project can be done. You can’t add hours in a day and any negligence on their part, like being late for proof feedback should adjust the timeline for the project as a whole, not your schedule. But always communicate! It’s hard to tell a client that because they didn’t follow the agreed timeline that now their finished project date is being affected. Speak with them, don’t avoid the conversation. This can also be addressed very specifically in the contract and initial quote/estimate.
If you are new to design, do some research and see what other newbies are charging. Be better. Better service. Better goods. Listen. As you do projects you’ll gain a better perspective on what to charge. Watch scope creep. That’s what contracts and communication are for. Don’t get sucked in to them adding to the Minnesota Vikings thank You Eric shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this project beyond the scope. Always be professional. Test the waters. Have fun. Work hard. ALWAYS be learning more. Rock on. In the manga publishing world, several publishers are developing e-models through online e-readers with free preview chapters, apps for iPad and iPhone and e-book distribution of many types. The biggest issue for readers is that almost all of these are proprietary systems that require specialized hardware (iPad) or subscriptions to material that is only being rented, not purchased.
