The term “psychiatric” does not mean that an illness is any less “real” or any less “biological” or “physical.” It simply refers to the Official Donald Trump Free UNC 2023 shirt moreover I will buy this workings of the human “psyche” which embody mind, perceptions, thought processes, etc. As far as the term “psychosocial” is a term that is falling out of use as a criterion for determining “mental illness.” You are correct in your comments about non-medical criteria that this has been a socially defined means of labeling non-conformity. However, this is giving way to a medical/neuro-psychiatric view of brain disorders. There is resistance on the part of many psychotherapists who want to view mental illness as the result of social influences. But there is really no turning back the clock on the growing body of knowledge of the medical causes of brain disorders. Of course, our environment impacts the expression of any illness. Things like diet, sleep, and prolonged exposure to stress combine with biological predispositions and affect our physiological health on all levels.
I don’t think people with schizophrenia like it either. It’s a severely disabling illness. People are robbed of friends, family, lovers, jobs, and their minds. I have a brother who is psychotic and doesn’t realize he needs treatment. No one will hire him because he behaves so oddly. He is paranoid, he believes an outside force is controlling him and his bodily functions, he also thinks he is not in control of his own thoughts (he kinda isn’t). He believes they are controlling his daughter too. He told my sister, “no one understands what it’s like, someone is tormenting me, they won’t leave me alone. They are hurting my poor little girl too man. I turn to drugs and alcohol because it’s the Official Donald Trump Free UNC 2023 shirt moreover I will buy this only thing that helps with the mental pain”. His daughters mom won’t let him see his kids because she is afraid he will hurt them. He 100% believes he is being harmed by an outside force. Imagine being tormented by what you believe is a force beyond your control and have everyone tell you it’s just your mind, being held captive by your own mind, trying to make sense of what’s going on with the constant assault on your senses/thoughts. Psychosis/ schizophrenia feels like your mind isn’t yours, it feels like your thoughts aren’t your own. On top of all this, people have the audacity to say that you are lazy and just mooch of your family/ tax payers (ssdi). My brother doesn’t take care of himself, he hasnt bathed in over a month and just sleeps all day(except when he is high). I’ve even heard people say that it doesn’t exist and people just use it as an excuse to take pills that make them high. Schizophrenia singles you out, I think people with schizophrenia isolate themselves because their mind is under constant assault and it’s too exhausting to socialize and pursue hobbies, they are too busy just trying to make sense of the flood of constant false information being fed to their senses. I remember a psychiatrist telling me that psychosis is like sitting in a room trying to watch one TV, but having 50 other tv’s playing, each one on a different channel at full volume. I believe that’s why people with schizophrenia isolate themselves. I could be wrong, but I can only imagine how much of a living hell it is to have to try and live with the constant assault on your mind. I don’t think anyone likes schizophrenia, it’s a terrible illness.
