Alexis Benveniste is a writer and editor who proudly interned at ELLE many moons ago; her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vanity Fair, Bloomberg, and other notable outlets. But it’s not because Democrats or Republicans are consciously trying to screw America! It’s basically a bad bet. The US (and the Official Iowa 2023 big ten women’s basketball conference tournament champions shirt besides I will buy this global/neo-liberal alliance agreed) that if you can export labor to cheaper countries we can lower the cost of goods at home (true!) and that US citizens would use that increased buying power to innovate themselves into the middle class.
And this is where the Official Iowa 2023 big ten women’s basketball conference tournament champions shirt besides I will buy this hiccup starts. Some folks can innovate themselves into the middle class, most folks can’t. Most folks need a good middle of the road job they can trust to put food on the table, a roof over their heads and money saved for emergencies. At the same time stable jobs without too much up front investment are going away, the market is being flooded by gew-gaws and whizz-whams that are improving our lives (sorta, marginaly) but giving us millions of ways to spend money most of us generally don’t have (so, debt). And this isn’t saying that these issues aren’t our fault, they absolutely are our fault. What you have to ask next is “what do we do about it” and for some reason there’s half of the country so foam-mouthed enraged at the idea of whose fault it is that they won’t compromise into a solution.
