In the Official thank god I don’t look like what I’ve been through shirt and I will buy this NFL, since the winner of a division always makes the playoffs, it’s theoretically possible to reach the playoffs with a record of 3–13 [EDIT: now 3–14]! To make matters even more interesting, this team would be automatically ranked above the conference’s wildcard teams and would have home field advantage in at least their first game. This, however, would be extraordinarily unlikely to say the least. It would mean that all four teams in the division split their games against their division rivals, and then lost every other game on their schedule. Since every team in the division would have identical records, it would fall to at least the sixth tiebreaker (strength of schedule) to determine which team would (in all likelihood) finish their season at 3–14 instead of 3–13.
Things get more and more likely the Official thank god I don’t look like what I’ve been through shirt and I will buy this more wins you add (4–12, 5–11, etc). And I think it’s safe to say that if a team that bad got ever got in, the NFL competition committee would be taking a hard look at the whole playoff system. But wait, there’s more! If your head is already spinning too much from the above scenario, you may not want to read past this point. Because I was lying to you. You can get into the playoffs with an even worse record than 3–13. In fact, you could actually squeak into the playoffs with no wins at all! Picture the above scenario, but instead of each team in a division splitting against their division rivals, they instead always tied when they played each other. But the odds of this happening is about the same as me being unanimously declared Emperor of Earth within the next 24 hours.
