The socks are form fitting in order to hold your shinpads in place. If they weren’t, your shinpads would roll around on your calf. The socks are thicker than your average form fitting pants because rinks are cold. It’s a rather interesting story. Until the 1950s teams basically had one set of jerseys. In some cases this could cause myriad problems because the colors of the jerseys we often similar, for example the Detroit and Montreal uniforms. This changed again in 2003, and it was in fact souvenir sales and the third jersey/nostalgia jersey trend. These jerseys tended to be coloured jerseys, but souvenir sales are largely to home team fans. You want your fans to see the players they are cheering for wearing these jerseys, so you had “third jersey nights” and events where teams would wear their road jerseys at home. Increasingly road teams had to carry their white home jerseys as well as their coloured road jerseys, so the league determined that they’d mandate coloured home jerseys and contrasting away jerseys. Or rather they’d revert to the way it was before 1970.
