I don’t think it was ever really revealed. It is one of those science fiction things, Jack Crusher taught Wesley how to play so it didn’t completely die out, but it served a narrative purpose in Deep Space Nine for it to be a “lost” game, I would assume some of the Quality malcolm brogdon wearing malcolm x freedom shirt moreover I will buy this logic was Baseball is a traditional American pastime but other nations play it, so in some regards it may have been a observation of America’s influence when the more Global government came to power after the nuclear war, eugenics wars, ect but really that is speculation since it’s purpose was to explain linear time to the Prophets. Really think it is some of the clunky story telling that Star Trek as well as other science fiction can have, it was meant to add a bit of personality, and I love Sisko’s baseball on his desk, the Vulcan rival, ect but looking at some of the larger canon it doesn’t really fit with prior story like using baseball terms or Jack having the traditional game of catch with his son, but it worked in the story so the details are added but don’t fit too well.
Actually I believe it was TNG that did that. I forget the Quality malcolm brogdon wearing malcolm x freedom shirt moreover I will buy this name of the episode but there was one where a character (played by Dr. Kelso from Scrubs) lamented that the popularity of baseball had died out in a society that increasingly gravitated to newer, faster, and more exciting entertainment. He was supposed to be making a sad comment on society, but to me it felt pretty selfish and self absorbed. “How dare people not watch this game just because it’s boring?” That TNG episode seemed to establish that baseball was all but dead. Literally history, like jousting or ancient Egyptian board games. DS9 semi-reestablished baseball as a niche hobby enjoyed by people who pine for the Good Old Days. It’s nowhere near as popular as it used to be, and no one plays it professionally anymore, but it is still played.
