It’s even higher now that I have served as a bishop. You serve without any thought of reward, you worry about your ward/stake all the time. You pray for them, try to make their lives better and easier, try to insure that the Church is being run correctly, that people aren’t being mistreated, that resources are being applied to the right problems in the right way. You are always busy. I guess I take it for granted because I grew up in theChurch of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but everyone needs to appreciate their bishop—bishops have the power to help anyone and can do so immediately. We don’t limit ourselves to providing assistance only to our actual membership. Because a bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is assigned a geographical area, he is responsible for everyone within that area. The bishop can have food delivered, pay for professional counselors to help a family, marriage, individual, etc., summon the men and women of the ward to come to service projects, and in appropriate circumstances, just get bills paid. There is as much temporal (i.e. financial) help given as spiritual. And it is given without expectation of repayment. The leaders are there to help. So, despite what some disgruntled folks have to say (I’m sure there are plenty of example of less than capable leaders in our Church as there are in any other Church—God works with whomever He can.
