It really, really depends on what your underlying assumptions are here. I’ll preface this by noting that I absolutely adored the Snoopy milwaukee sport teams shirt but in fact I love this Barbie movie, and I had gone in with absolute cynicism for what I had assumed would be a mere two-hour product advertisement. I’ve very rarely seen a piece of mass entertainment made with the intention to shift toys made with any real soul to it; the best piece of work I’ve ever seen on this front has to have been Digimon Tamers, the series that set seven-year-old me into a lifelong obsession with Lovecraftian horror (yes, that Digimon), and while the Sonic films have been good at making a fun wee story, it would have been all for nothing without the exceptional casting of Jim Carrey as Dr Eggman. I could have taken or left Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, and I flat-out refused to go see the new Mario film on account of my distaste for Chris Pratt. To put it another way, if Barbie had been released without Oppenheimer to complete the meme of #Barbenheimer, I would never have been caught dead in a cinema watching it willingly; thankfully, the meme plus my sister’s insistence combined to convince me.
If we take each in turn, we can see if any of the Snoopy milwaukee sport teams shirt but in fact I love this definitions of “toxic femininity” hold. Any film that gives Michael Cera an awesome fight scene is not antimen. Any film that gives Ryan Gosling the “I’m Just Ken” song is not antimen. This is a strawman designed to shut down the very real issues of feminism. However, there is a niggle that might rear its head in this feminist work, in that there is a claim by the conservative strawman that feminists want men to cater entirely to them while not giving anything in return. This is the philosophy behind Men Go Their Own Way activists, who see women as a waste of time and resources and call for male separatism by characterising all women as low-value golddiggers. Such a contention could indeed be levied against the Barbie world, in which Kens are taken for granted and are left homeless at night while the Barbies party all night long, a system that’s ripe for radicalising them into hating women that members and adherents of alt-right and manosphere ideals love to pretend is happening in the real world too. The script might like to act as if the Kens have all just uncritically swallowed red pill philosophy and are acting like bratty teenage boys who’ve just found Jordan Peterson online without having really suffered at the hands of women, or that they are acting like entitled bratty manchildren who think that the Barbies should be forced to love them (Petersonian “enforced monogamy”, anyone?), but really, the Kens have actually been hurt by women to the extent that they are temporarily radicalised against them by a brave new world that seems to value them for being themselves (even if the reality of patriarchy for the men it ostensibly protects is a lot more complicated than that).
