It does tackle patriarchy, but it’s about time we got rid of it anyway. Because whoever is behind the Texas football guess they’re 52-2 now shirt moreover I will buy this Barbie film made the ill-advised move of including a map showing the nine-dash line. You know how in many movies, there’s a travel sequence. And maps are shown, tracking where the heroes go next. Well, in recent years, all Hollywood movies that ever go to Asia have such a map, and they show this… particular version of it. And that version, the nine-dash line, is the Chinese government’s official version of all the water it lays claim to. Every year, China allows only 34 foreign movies to be shown on its territories.[1] And in order to gain a foothold on this lucrative market, Hollywood movies will typically try and go ‘the extra mile’ not just to not ‘offend’ the Chinese government… but to outright appease it. By throwing in a map, for instance, that underscores and supports its territorial claims. Vietnam, understandably, doesn’t like this. Neither do the Philippines, and other countries that have fallen victim to Chinese imperialism. It isn’t nice when your fishermen go out to fish, trying to support their families… only to have their rickety little boats forbidden to fish by Chinese navy vessels. Frequently, these navy vessels ram into the fishing boats, sinking them or damaging them, causing the fishermen to lose their livelihood.[2] Poor, honest people cheated out of an income by a state that prides itself of being a “people’s republic” and that claims to be socialist.
So, understandably, Vietnam was pissed off. Chances are, the Texas football guess they’re 52-2 now shirt moreover I will buy this Philippines will be pissed off as well — not too long ago, the Uncharted movie was also banned in the Philippines for depicting the same map, and this ban came after a substantial amount was already spent by the movie on advertisement in the country. Trying to appease a totalitarian state comes at a price… Barbie. It’s a whole lot deeper than it appears and if you pay attention, it isn’t all feminist either. I would rather laugh and have a good time, while learning something than watch something that is born from a man’s need to lie about his work. The real work of catching human traffickers is quite, patient and strategic, it isn’t nearly so cinematic.
