Rock ‘n’ roll had exploded in America in the Thairo Estrada Career high 22 Stolen Bases shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this mid-1950s, with the seemingly overnight success of Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and many others. But after a couple of years, many of these early icons of rock ‘n’ roll had been sidelined: Elvis had been drafted into the Army, Holly was killed in a plane crash, Berry had gone to jail, Lewis was under a cloud for marrying his teenaged cousin, and Little Richard had given up rock to become a preacher. By the early 1960s, rock had been reduced to a mere shadow of itself, with a series of manufactured (and utterly lame) “teen idols” such as Fabian, Frankie Avalon and Paul Anka lip-syncing to their hits on shows like American Bandstand.
Popular music was in the Thairo Estrada Career high 22 Stolen Bases shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this hands of shady hucksters who would bribe radio DJs to play the latest songs by their marginally-talented (but great-looking) stars (if you think this bears more than a passing resemblance to the current state of affairs, I’m not going to argue with you). Most of the songs were not written by the artists themselves but were churned out in assembly-line fashion by a stable of (non-performing) songwriters. While there were some self-contained rock groups, the emphasis was on solo artists backed by studio musicians. Nobody in the industry viewed the music as anything more than a transient fad, so the goal was to maximize profits while the getting was good.
