The season is based on a 25-man roster. Certainly, if teams were forced to carry 18 or 32 or whatever players, the standings would look quite different. Teams like the Mets with little organizational depth would perform even worse. Teams with more organizational depth like the Rangers would gain an even greater advantage. The playoffs are merely designed to reflect the same rules as the regular season. Just don’t get me started on the validity of a 5 or 7-game series following a 162-game season. No. Rule 21D(2) pretty much has kept baseball free of game fixing and gambler involvement in on the field and off the field influences. Well, with one notable exception… There is a 25 man roster in the playoffs because for 5 of the 6 month long season, there is a 25 man limit on players on a team. The increased roster size for September is a bit of an anomaly. I think its good for the game though – it gives a team new blood as the season enters its final month, it gives fans of non-contending teams a reason to watch their team play even after they’ve been eliminated, and it allows teams to get an idea of how their minor leaguers would perform in the majors without having to sacrifice a roster spot. Also, teams in contention wont be as likely to use these players unless these players are good and should probably be on the team anyway.
