Of course, there are some people who have missed the boat entirely and built pseudo-scientific theories on the idea. And while, as I noted above, it is true that there is a pecking order in most social groups, I think that most of the people writing on the internet and speculating about the nature of the alpha/beta dichotomy in humans are barking up the wrong tree. Yes, humans have dominance hierarchies, but these hierarchies are very complex and can manifest in different ways. Bill Gates would definitely be the “beta” in a biker bar. In the Microsoft board room, not so much. The bikers would probably not think much of Mr. Gates, but you better believe the other executives at Microsoft respect and even fear him.He’s an “alpha” in human society as well, given his vast fortune and the global reach of the companies he controls.
