There are a lot of reasons the league stayed pretty small for a while. Two of the big reasons are history (mostly World War II and the Great Depression) and travel times. The history portion of this is pretty simple: The League started up after World War I, expanded early, especially during the 1920’s boom times, was hurt by the depression, and was really hit when the players went off to fight in World War II. , the Montreal Maroons were gone, and we were down to the original 6 and the New York Americans. By the time World War II was in full swing The Original Six: the Chicago Black Hawks (later to become the “Blackhawks”), the Boston Bruins, the Montreal Canadians, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the New York Rangers, and the Detroit Red Wings (formerly the Falcons).
